Like what? Well, many married people will be aware that there is a custom of giving certain gifts on certain years. We have probably all heard talk of silver wedding anniversaries, diamond wedding anniversaries, the ruby anniversary and so on. But, did you know that custom extends right down through the first fifteen years, including the gift for the 4th anniversary?

Alongside the old world tradition an new alternative list of gifts has grown-up, probably as a result of the archaic nature of some of the traditional customary gifts. We cover this new list too in our advice

Gifts aside, many a woman will expect flowers on her 4th anniversary and most men will expect to give roses. But, this is not actually the correct the flower to give; not according to another anniversary custom. You should be giving Geraniums!

Of course, many men will turn their backs on the traditional type of gifts and choose to give that old favourite of jewellery instead. Well, guess what; you can give jewellery and still follow time-honoured tradition. That’s right, there’s are specific anniversary year customs for jewellery. It’s customary to mark the 3rd wedding anniversary with a gift made of leather. So, if it’s your 3rd anniversary, you should be shopping for leather gifts.

Leather: your mind is probably already racing away with you into the realms of some exotic costume or other …erm…fantasy. But hold your horses. This anniversary gift is for her, not you! Let’s try to think of something a little less risque that will be appreciated a lot more.

What’s the most common leather item owned by a woman? A belt? Maybe. A purse? Possibly. Shoes? Well okay, but not really gift material. But, bet you every woman has a handbag and would adore a swanky new leather one. Something at the price level that should would never-ever dream of treating herself too.

For handbags, think in terms of designer labels, like Mulberry, Fendi, Prada, etc. And, possibly a good idea to take her best (female) friend out shopping with you. Look, if she doesn’t like it she’ll appreciate the effort and can still exchange it at the shop.

If you’re really not up to shopping for handbags, you could always make her a voucher to give her instead. Put a picture of the bag you would have chosen on it. Book a day (maybe on your anniversary itself) to go do the big shop. And, make a day of it by treating her to lunch too. Oh, and don’t moan no matter how many bags she tries!

Firstly, your marriage has already outlasted many. In fact it’s lasted longer than average! According to the latest official statistics the average marriage only lasts 11.5 years, so yours is positively immortal. You’re doing very well to still be together!
