The best wedding anniversary gifts are those that are remembered — for the right reasons! Those that last the rest of a life-time together (or where the fond memories last instead). Those that mean something to the recipient, hold a sentimental value. And, most of all, those that truly communicate just how much your love your husband or wife on this your anniversary.

Firstly, if you are not already aware then you should be advised that there are established customs of giving certain types of gifts on many of the wedding anniversaries in the UK. Yes, many are aware of the big ones, like silver for the 25th anniversary or gold for the 50th wedding anniversary, or diamond for the 60th for that matter. But, did you know that many of the lessor, more humble (and attainable!) ones are also steeped in a tradition of giving certain gifts?!

Tradition is, by it’s very nature old fashioned. When the tradition of giving certain gifts on certain anniversaries was established it was a different world. One without i-pods or hair straighteners! More everyday things (like fruit!) were considered luxuries for the average family. And, gifts were often more, frankly, practical and essential than exciting — like bedlinen, for example.

Thankfully, times are a little easier these days and in respect of that, a modern alternative gift for each many an anniversary year has come about. Combine the modern and the traditional ‘customs’ and that gives you two immediate avenues to investigate.

Jewellery is a third, because the jewellers got in on the act and at some time special customs for jewellery given on anniversaries developed. So, for many anniversary years, there are specific requirements/ recommendations for jewellery too.

Finally, not wanting to be left out, the florists also developed there own customary flowers for the anniversary years. That’s right: you should not be giving a dozen red roses every year!

You can see all these customs as unnecessary rules to be disregarded. You can see them as a pain in the backside. Or, as we would recommend, you can see them as your friend, your ally, a source of inspiration and a reason to choose this over that. And, if pushed, your justification for why you chose the gift and why it isn’t as random or ill-considered as she is suggesting!
