Letting you into the bigger picture, I can tell you that all this content, while useful, is only the prelude to the really useful technology that’s coming soon. Our 5th wedding anniversary gift advice is now updated and expanded. Only a couple of months after first producing the pages, we’ve been working our way through them again with improvements. The result, is a whole lot more specific information on the 5th anniversary gifts page.

All the anniversary year gift pages cover four main areas:

1) What the traditional 5th anniversary gift theme is and ideas for what specific gifts to give.

2) What the contemporary modern alternative is, because tradition (by its very nature) can be a bit archaic! Again, we spill the facts and follow up with more specific 5th anniversary gift suggestions.

3) Each of the first 15 anniversary years — and many besides — have specific flowers associated with them. We name the 5th anniversary flower and tell you all about it. (Note that you shouldn’t give a dozen red roses every anniversary!)

4) Like with flowers, jewellery has special customs for the first 15 anniversaries and we give you facts about these. Turquoise is the customary anniversary gemstone for the 5th and we tell you all about it’s mystical properties and the ancient beliefs and myths surrounding it. Our 4th wedding anniversary gift advice has been updated. We’ve added loads of extra new information about what to consider when choosing the perfect 4 year anniversary gift.

Like what? Well, many married people will be aware that there is a custom of giving certain gifts on certain years. We have probably all heard talk of silver wedding anniversaries, diamond wedding anniversaries, the ruby anniversary and so on. But, did you know that custom extends right down through the first fifteen years, including the gift for the 4th anniversary?

Alongside the old world tradition an new alternative list of gifts has grown-up, probably as a result of the archaic nature of some of the traditional customary gifts. We cover this new list too in our advice

Gifts aside, many a woman will expect flowers on her 4th anniversary and most men will expect to give roses. But, this is not actually the correct the flower to give; not according to another anniversary custom. You should be giving Geraniums!

Of course, many men will turn their backs on the traditional type of gifts and choose to give that old favourite of jewellery instead. Well, guess what; you can give jewellery and still follow time-honoured tradition. That’s right, there’s are specific anniversary year customs for jewellery. And, on the 4th anniversary that means giving jewellery featuring Topaz and/ or Amethyst stones.

It’s customary to mark the 3rd wedding anniversary with a gift made of leather. So, if it’s your 3rd anniversary, you should be shopping for leather gifts.

Leather: your mind is probably already racing away with you into the realms of some exotic costume or other …erm…fantasy. But hold your horses. This anniversary gift is for her, not you! Let’s try to think of something a little less risque that will be appreciated a lot more.

What’s the most common leather item owned by a woman? A belt? Maybe. A purse? Possibly. Shoes? Well okay, but not really gift material. But, bet you every woman has a handbag and would adore a swanky new leather one. Something at the price level that should would never-ever dream of treating herself too.

For handbags, think in terms of designer labels, like Mulberry, Fendi, Prada, etc. And, possibly a good idea to take her best (female) friend out shopping with you. Look, if she doesn’t like it she’ll appreciate the effort and can still exchange it at the shop.

If you’re really not up to shopping for handbags, you could always make her a voucher to give her instead. Put a picture of the bag you would have chosen on it. Book a day (maybe on your anniversary itself) to go do the big shop. And, make a day of it by treating her to lunch too. Oh, and don’t moan no matter how many bags she tries!

Besides handbags, there’s a wealth of leather accessories to choose from including: purses, leather photo keyrings, leather photo frames, i-pod holders/ covers, travel wallets, gloves, jewellery. In fact, leather is probably one of the easier anniversary gifts to shop for. So, get to it.

The 2nd Anniversary Year Gifts page has been updated. As part of our rolling improvements, we’ve added loads of extra juicy content!

Besides the hard and fast 2nd anniversary facts, we’ve added expanded sections on the 2nd Anniversary Year Flower and 2nd Anniversary Year Jewellery. It’s one thing to know that you need to shop for cosmos (flowers), but it’s even better to know why and something about them. Likewise when shopping for jewellery; if you’re going to go to all the effort of hunting down jewellery containing specifically rose quartz and/ or garnet, it’s great to know why you’re putting all that extra effort in!

The extra information also gives you a great story to tell when you give the gift. That’s half the secret of gift giving; making it apparent that this wasn’t any old anniversary gift, but a carefully considered one. A gift that you bought for a specific reason after doing a lot (!) of research. When you start regaling here with all the symbolism and mythology attached to the cosmos or garnet or rose quartz, she will begin to appreciate that you didn’t just buy the first gift you saw or flowers from the nearest petrol forecourt shop!
